Raising awareness of PSP and CBD, amongst the medical profession, the government and the general public, is a top priority for The PSP Association and is one of our biggest challenges.
Raising awareness will ultimately ensure that PSP and CBD become as well known as other major diseases such as Cancer or Parkinson's Disease. This is so important because an increased awareness will lead to improvements in patient diagnosis, care and treatment.
How does The PSP Association raise awareness?
Our team of Development Officers have specific responsibility for engendering awareness of PSP and CBD with the medical profession across the UK. By giving presentations and teaching sessions, they ensure that relevant health and social care professionals have a better understanding of the medical symptoms and the variations between PSP and CBD and other neuro-degenerative diseases.
We helped to form an All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for PSP in 2005, which has raised awareness within Government and we also advocated for improved support of people with PSP and CBD, such as the employment of more specialist neurological nurses. We are also involved with monitoring the implementation of the Department of Health's National Service Framework for Long Term Neurological Conditions in relation to PSP and CBD. As a result we know that there are large areas of the UK where it is yet to be well implemented and we are championing for this through appropriate channels.
National PSP Awareness Week takes place each year in April and a key aim is to engender awareness of PSP and CBD amongst the general public. In particluar, we ask people to organise an Afternoon Tea for PSP to raise funds and 'spread the word' in their local area.
